Man fatally stabbed during altercation in Cross River

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 42 year old man over the alleged killing of a resident during a dispute in Etayip Community, Ikom Local Government Area of the state.

The victim, identified as 36 year old Charles Ekuma Eze, was reportedly stabbed with a dagger after an argument on July 4. Despite being rushed to hospital for treatment, he later died from his injuries.

Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the incident was reported to officers at the Ikom Police Division later that night by two community leaders, prompting an immediate investigation.

He said preliminary findings linked the suspect, Michael Ndifon, to the attack, adding that the victim was first taken to Holy Family Hospital in Ikom before being referred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where doctors confirmed his death.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, for medical treatment but was later referred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment,” the police spokesperson said.

Investigators have recovered the suspected murder weapon, while the suspect remains in custody.

“The corpse has been deposited in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. The suspect has been arrested, and the suspected murder weapon recovered as an exhibit.

“Investigation is ongoing, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet investigation,” he added.

The police said the case will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and assured residents that more information would be provided as the probe continues.
