The Kano State Police Command has impounded 72 vehicles for violating number plate regulations as part of its ongoing enforcement campaign, Operation Clean Plates.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday at the Motor Traffic Division office on BUK Road in Kano, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, said the operation targets vehicles with covered, defaced or missing number plates, describing the practice as a major security concern.

According to him, criminals often use such vehicles to conceal their identities while carrying out unlawful activities and evade law enforcement.

Bakori disclosed that the command conducted extensive public awareness campaigns through radio, television and social media before commencing the enforcement exercise to ensure motorists were adequately informed.

He said vehicle owners were reminded of their legal obligation to properly register their vehicles and display clearly visible number plates.

The commissioner added that the operation is being carried out across all 44 local government areas of Kano State.

He revealed that 72 vehicles have so far been impounded for violating the regulations, while their drivers will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Bakori also disclosed that three additional vehicles were intercepted under suspicious circumstances after their occupants failed to provide satisfactory explanations to officers.

He said the suspects and the vehicles are currently undergoing further investigation.

The police commissioner assured residents that the operation is aimed at improving public safety rather than harassing motorists.

He urged vehicle owners to comply with the law by installing standard number plates and removing any coverings or obstructions.

Bakori also encouraged members of the public to cooperate with security personnel and report any acts of misconduct by police officers.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, adding that the operation will continue until full compliance is achieved.
