Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state has expressed confidence that all 36 state houses of assembly will approve the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police.

The governor spoke in a statement posted on his Facebook page shortly after participating in the Arise Television town hall meeting on state policing on Thursday.

“At the Arise Television Town Hall Meeting on State Policing, we expressed confidence that all 36 State Houses of Assembly will simultaneously approve the constitutional amendment bill on the creation of state police, following the broad national consensus and extensive consultations that have shaped the proposed legislation,” he wrote.

“We commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for transmitting the Executive Bill to the National Assembly and appreciated the commitment of lawmakers and stakeholders who have advanced this historic reform.”

The governor, who chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) committee on the creation of state police, said the confidence stems from what he described as a broad national consensus and extensive consultations that informed the proposed legislation.

Abiodun said the NGF committee had worked closely with state governors and other stakeholders to develop a framework for the proposed state police system.

According to him, the framework is designed to strengthen community policing, improve internal security, create employment opportunities, and boost Nigeria’s police-to-citizen ratio.

The governor said the establishment of state police, supported by a strong legal and operational framework, would significantly enhance the country’s security architecture.

He added that the proposed system would prioritise professionalism, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all Nigerians.
