The University of Jos (UNIJOS) community was thrown into panic on Tuesday after the decapitated body of a middle-aged man was found on farmland within the university premises.
At the time this report was filed, the victim’s identity had not been officially established. His body was discovered without its head, which was still missing, causing fear among students, staff, and residents of the university.
Speaking with Vanguard, a 300-level student, Pius Atok, said the corpse was found on a farm located within the university community.
“The body was found this morning on a farm around the university community.
From what we gathered, the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff of the university,” he said.
A senior university official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media, also confirmed the incident. The official explained that preliminary investigations suggested the deceased was a farmer who regularly worked on the farmland where his body was discovered.
According to the official, “The victim is neither a student nor a staff member of the university. He is known to people around the area because he usually comes there to farm. We believe he came very early this morning, as he normally does.
“What actually happened is still unclear, but from the nature of the attack, it appears those responsible came specifically to kill him and made away with his head.”
The official further stated that the victim’s family had been informed and that plans were underway to remove the body from the scene.
He added that the university management had been briefed on the incident and would release an official statement to the university community and the public.
“The Information Directorate is handling the situation and will communicate appropriately through the university’s official platforms,” the source added.
Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, to confirm the incident and provide additional information were unsuccessful.
