The Senate has cautioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making statements it says could undermine ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies in the fight against terrorism and kidnapping.

The warning followed Makinde’s call on the United Nations to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The resolution was adopted on Tuesday after lawmakers considered a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele on the successful rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped on May 15, 2026.

The Senate commended President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to mobilise all necessary resources for the rescue operation, which lasted more than 50 days and led to the victims’ release on July 10. Lawmakers also noted that eight suspected terrorists were arrested while several others were neutralised.

The chamber paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives during the operation, including Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, while acknowledging Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained injuries.

Lawmakers urged the Federal Government to promptly pay all benefits due to the families of the fallen officers and improve the welfare, training and equipment of security agencies.

The Senate also called for intensified operations to secure the release of other Nigerians still held captive nationwide.
