The Federal Government has approved ₦3.6 billion to support tailors under the Industrial Training Fund’s (ITF) Skill Up Artisans Programme (SUPA), aimed at creating jobs, strengthening the informal sector and producing globally competitive artisans.

ITF Director-General Afiz Ogun announced the approval on Wednesday during the nationwide screening of applicants for the 2026 edition of the programme in Abuja.

Ogun said the screening exercise was designed to identify genuine artisans committed to improving their skills, adding that about 200,000 beneficiaries are expected to participate nationwide in the first phase of the programme.

According to him, successful applicants will either be prepared for international employment opportunities, linked directly with employers or enrolled in a structured business incubation programme.

He explained that the government abandoned the previous practice of distributing starter packs after discovering that many beneficiaries sold the equipment instead of using it for businesses.

Instead, participants in the incubation programme, particularly tailors, will receive industrial sewing machines, specialised equipment, mentoring and entrepreneurship support.

Ogun also revealed plans to launch a digital marketplace where certified artisans can showcase their work, receive customer ratings and connect with prospective clients.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would reduce unemployment, improve vocational standards and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian artisans both locally and internationally.
