A late-night fire swept through part of Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos State, destroying 17 containerised lock-up shops, while firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading further.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the emergency call came in shortly after midnight, prompting a rapid response from its personnel, who arrived at the scene within minutes.
According to the agency, the fire affected 17 of the roughly 30 containerised shops in the section of the market where the incident occurred. However, swift intervention by firefighters stopped the flames from reaching nearby shops and surrounding buildings.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said officers from the Ikorodu and Ijede fire stations combined efforts to contain the fire and minimise damage.
She also disclosed that authorities are yet to determine the cause of the incident, adding that an investigation has begun to establish what sparked the blaze.
