Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba has been appointed as the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan following the conclusion of a competitive selection exercise conducted by the institution’s Governing Council.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, after the council endorsed the recommendation of the Joint Council Senate Selection Board.
Akande explained that the appointment process was initiated in line with the University Act as the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor is expected to end on November 1, 2026.
He said advertisements inviting applications for the position were published in April 2026 in three national newspapers, with six candidates applying initially. A Search Team later identified two additional qualified candidates, increasing the number of contenders to eight.
The Pro Chancellor disclosed that the council met with all eight applicants on July 21, where each candidate was independently assessed using approved guidelines. Five candidates emerged from the exercise and progressed to the final stage.
He added that the Selection Board, made up of representatives from both the Governing Council and the University Senate, interviewed the shortlisted candidates before recommending Olapegba for the position.
Describing the exercise as “thorough, transparent and highly competitive,” Akande said the Governing Council unanimously approved the recommendation.
“It is, therefore, my pleasure to present to you the 14th Vice-Chancellor of this great university, the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba. We wish him success in his tenure,” he said.
Olapegba, a Professor of Psychology and the current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), will take over the leadership of Nigeria’s premier university when the tenure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor expires on November 1, 2026.
