The Kano State House of Assembly has launched an investigation into the use of monthly security allocations released to the state’s 44 local government councils following renewed bandit attacks in parts of the state.
The probe follows growing concerns that funds meant to strengthen security are not translating into adequate operational support for security agencies.
The resolution was adopted after lawmakers considered a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Garba Gwarmai, representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, during plenary presided over by Speaker Isma’il Falgore.
Presenting the motion, Gwarmai said recurring attacks by suspected bandits in Tsanyawa Local Government Area have left residents living in fear while disrupting farming, education, healthcare services and other socio-economic activities.
He said the latest attack occurred in Yan Cibi community in Yan Kamaye Ward, where suspected bandits allegedly attempted to abduct residents and rustle cattle before they were repelled by security operatives.
According to him, the attack claimed the life of community leader and vigilante member Yusuf Adamu, while several others sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
Gwarmai commended the military and police for recovering many of the stolen cattle but noted that the difficult terrain along the Kano-Katsina border prevented security personnel from pursuing the attackers.
He questioned the effectiveness of the monthly security allocations reportedly released to local government councils, arguing that frontline security operatives continue to face logistical challenges despite the availability of the funds.
Following deliberations, the Assembly directed its relevant committee to investigate the utilisation of the security allocations by local government councils to ensure transparency and accountability.
Lawmakers also urged the Kano State and Nigerian Government to strengthen security in border communities by deploying more security personnel, improving logistics and adopting proactive measures to prevent further attacks and curb the spread of banditry.
