The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Olufemi Adesuyi, has called for tighter security at Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection centres following the theft of PVCs in Okuku, Odo Otin Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Adesuyi urged the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, to work closely with security agencies to strengthen protection across all 332 ward collection centres where voters are collecting their PVCs.
He warned that the Okuku incident should serve as a wake-up call, stressing that voters who had completed the registration process should not be deprived of their cards because of criminal activities or inadequate security.
Adesuyi called for the immediate deployment of additional security personnel, particularly to rural collection centres, to prevent similar incidents and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
He said protecting PVCs is essential to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, adding that securing collection centres is necessary to protect both voters’ rights and democracy.
The call follows Sunday’s attack at the PVC distribution centre at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Okuku, where suspected hoodlums reportedly fired gunshots into the air before fleeing with packs of PVCs, disrupting the ongoing distribution exercise.
