Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan was unable to retain her women’s 100m hurdles crown after finishing third in the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The world record holder crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium on Thursday, falling short in her bid to secure a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Amusan made a strong start out of the blocks, but struggled to maintain her rhythm after the opening hurdles. Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton and Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds quickly pulled ahead, leaving the Nigerian chasing the leaders.
Having defeated Charlton to claim gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Amusan was unable to repeat the feat this time. Charlton stormed to victory in 12.33 seconds, while Simmonds finished second to claim silver, with Amusan taking bronze.
The Nigerian sprint hurdler had hoped to become the first woman in Commonwealth Games history to win three successive 100m hurdles titles, having remained unbeaten at the event since her debut at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
Amusan’s bronze medal was Team Nigeria’s second athletics medal of the evening. Earlier, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s shot put.
Team Nigeria’s medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games now stands at 16 medals, comprising eight gold, five silver and three bronze.
