Shock and grief have swept across Uganda following the death of national team player and SC Villa captain David Owori, who died after being attacked by suspected robbers near his residence in Kampala.
The 27-year-old footballer was reportedly making his way home on Tuesday night when he was confronted by a group of attackers in the Makindye area. During the assault, the suspects allegedly hit him with paving stones before fleeing with his valuables.
Owori was rushed for emergency treatment and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala. However, he eventually succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained during the attack.
Confirming the tragedy, SC Villa described the late captain as an irreplaceable figure whose impact went far beyond football.
As reported by the BBC on Thursday, “We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend,” the club said in a statement.
Speaking on the incident, SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye explained that the attack happened just a short distance from Owori’s home.
“The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility,” Kasingye said.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have since opened an investigation into the killing. According to police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, detectives have processed the crime scene and are gathering evidence that could lead to the arrest of those behind the attack.
“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said.
Known by fans as “Colgate,” Owori built a reputation as one of Uganda’s finest defenders. He captained SC Villa and also earned recognition with the Uganda national team, the Cranes.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to the late footballer, remembering him as a role model who inspired many young players.
“David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation,” Fufa said.
Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 after a spell in Europe and was instrumental in helping the club end a 20-year wait for the Uganda Premier League title by winning the championship in 2024. His outstanding performances earned him a contract extension that was due to expire in 2027.
His death has sparked widespread calls for justice, with football fans, teammates and public figures urging authorities to strengthen efforts to combat violent crime in Kampala.
