Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s decision to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, saying the timing of the action raises concerns ahead of the state’s governorship election.
In a statement shared on his X page on Thursday, Obi said he remains committed to the fight against corruption but warned that anti-corruption efforts should never create the impression of political interference or undermine democratic principles.
“I have always supported a relentless fight against corruption. However, that fight must never become a tool for political intimidation or the suppression of democracy,” Obi said.
He argued that institutions responsible for upholding the law must carry out their duties in a way that inspires public trust, particularly during sensitive political periods.
Obi questioned why the commission decided to freeze the state’s accounts at this stage if the investigation had been ongoing for a long time.
“The timing of this action raises legitimate questions. If investigations had been ongoing for months, why take such a drastic step on the eve of an election?” he asked.
The former Anambra State governor said public confidence in democratic institutions depends on both their independence and the perception that they operate without political influence.
He also warned that any action capable of creating doubts about the neutrality of government agencies could damage Nigeria’s democratic system.
“Governments come and go, but once institutions lose their independence and credibility, the nation suffers,” he said.
While acknowledging that allegations of misconduct should be investigated, Obi maintained that authorities must follow the legal process provided by the Constitution.
“If there is evidence of wrongdoing, the Constitution provides a clear path: seek the appropriate orders from a competent court. Due process is the foundation of justice,” he stated.
He called on all relevant institutions to ensure that their actions do not cast doubt on the credibility of the Osun governorship election, adding that voters should be allowed to make their choices freely without intimidation.
“Nigeria’s democracy was built on sacrifice. We must not allow it to be weakened by the misuse of institutions or the pursuit of political advantage,” he added.
