Anambra businessman and Managing Director of JEZCO Oil, Chief Joseph Ezeokafor, and a Reverend Sister whose identity has not been disclosed have regained their freedom after spending 10 days in the custody of their abductors.
The two victims were kidnapped in the Ifite area of Awka, Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command said a family member picked up the victims from a location close to the Anambra-Enugu boundary following their release.
The command added that security agencies were working to determine the circumstances surrounding their release and gather information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the police said: “The Anambra State Police Command confirms that, today, 15th August 2026, Chief J. J. Ezeokafor and a Rev. Sister, who were earlier abducted by armed criminals at Ifite-Awka, have been released and have safely returned.
“The command is currently taking necessary steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain relevant information that will assist ongoing investigations and identification of the perpetrators.
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, while commending the safe return of the victims, further directs intensified intelligence-led operations and manhunt for those responsible for the abduction.”
According to the police, the operation involves personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agunechemba security operatives and other relevant security agencies.
The command also thanked members of the public for their cooperation and support, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information that could help security agencies apprehend those behind the abduction.
It remained unclear whether any ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release, especially as the abductors were reportedly demanding N1.5 billion from the businessman’s family.
