The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu and members of his technical crew following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The federation announced the decision on Monday through a post on X.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF stated.
The decision comes days after the Super Falcons suffered a defeat to South Africa in the continental playoff for the 2027 Women’s World Cup on August 13, ending Nigeria’s long-standing participation in the tournament.
The Falcons had previously missed out on one of the four automatic qualification spots after losing to Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Madugu faced significant criticism during the WAFCON campaign, particularly over his team selection and tactical decisions.
The 62-year-old coach leaves his position less than a year after guiding the Super Falcons to their 10th continental title.
Following the team’s disappointing performance, the NFF also constituted a six-member “fact-finding” committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Falcons’ setbacks.
Former NFF general secretary Fanny Amun was appointed chairman of the committee.
Other members are former Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso, ex-Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie, former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju and former referee Alex Mana. Nasiru Sa’idu, chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, will serve as the committee’s secretary.
The committee is expected to examine the factors behind the team’s failure and make recommendations to the football federation.
