Indonesia sends Nigerian home over immigration breach

Indonesian authorities have deported a Nigerian citizen after he was unable to produce valid documents permitting him to remain in the country.

The Nigerian was among two foreign nationals removed from Indonesia on Tuesday, August 18, through the immigration facility at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, according to ANTARA News.

“The Nigerian national could not show immigration officers a valid travel document or residence permit, violating Article 71(b) of the Immigration Law,” the report noted.

The man had earlier been held at the Tanjungpinang Immigration Detention Centre in Riau Islands Province while officials established his identity and arranged the documents required for his deportation.

A detention centre official, I Wayan Putu Wiadnya, described the action as part of Indonesia’s administrative response to immigration violations.

“We returned them and ensured the entire process was conducted professionally, orderly, safely and accountably.”

He was deported alongside a Palestinian citizen who was removed for overstaying his authorised period in Indonesia, contrary to Article 78(3) of the country’s Immigration Law.

The detention centre’s head, Erybowo Radyan Asmono, said the latest deportations reflected the authorities’ continued efforts to enforce immigration regulations and ensure proper control of foreigners residing in the country.

“Immigration law enforcement is essential to protecting national sovereignty, but it must remain firm, professional and guided by humanitarian principles.”

Asmono further called on foreigners in Indonesia to observe the country’s immigration requirements, warning that breaches could result in administrative measures.
