JAPA: 17 African countries whose citizens can travel to Nigeria visa-free in 2026

15

Citizens of 17 African countries can travel to Nigeria without obtaining a visa before their journey, although the applicable conditions differ depending on the country.

Citizens of all 15 Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries benefit from the regional free-movement arrangement, which allows them to enter Nigeria without a visa for short stays, subject to Nigeria’s immigration requirements.

In addition, citizens of Cameroon and Chad can enter Nigeria without a visa for up to 90 days under a separate visa-abolition agreement between Nigeria and the two countries.

15 ECOWAS countries with visa-free access to Nigeria

Under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, citizens of member states can enter other ECOWAS countries without obtaining visas for short visits.

The 15 countries are:

  1. Benin
  2. Burkina Faso
  3. Cabo Verde
  4. Côte d’Ivoire
  5. The Gambia
  6. Ghana
  7. Guinea
  8. Guinea-Bissau
  9. Liberia
  10. Mali
  11. Niger
  12. Nigeria
  13. Senegal
  14. Sierra Leone
  15. Togo

The arrangement is based on the ECOWAS regional protocol on the free movement of persons, residence and establishment.

However, visa-free access does not mean travellers are exempt from immigration requirements.

Visitors are expected to possess valid passports or recognised travel documents and enter Nigeria through officially designated border points. Immigration authorities may also deny entry to individuals who are subject to restrictions under Nigerian law.

Cameroon and Chad have separate arrangements

Citizens of Cameroon and Chad also enjoy visa-free access to Nigeria under a separate bilateral visa-abolition arrangement.

Unlike the ECOWAS arrangement, the agreement allows citizens of both countries to enter and remain in Nigeria for up to 90 days without a visa.

The exemption is intended mainly for short visits. Those intending to work, conduct business or remain in the country beyond the permitted period may need to obtain the appropriate immigration authorisation.

What about citizens of other African countries?

Citizens of African countries that are not covered by either arrangement will generally need to obtain the appropriate Nigerian visa before travelling.

Visa requirements depend on the purpose and duration of the visit.

Applicants for short-stay tourist visas may generally be required to provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, passport photographs, evidence of return or onward travel, proof of sufficient funds and accommodation details or information about their host in Nigeria.

The duration of a tourist visa and other conditions are determined by the Nigerian immigration authorities.

Visa-free travel does not guarantee entry

Travellers should understand that visa exemption only means they do not need to obtain a visa before travelling. It does not guarantee admission into Nigeria.

Immigration officials can still examine travellers’ documents, the purpose of their visit and whether they meet the country’s entry requirements.

Travellers are therefore advised to confirm the latest requirements with the Nigeria Immigration Service or the relevant Nigerian diplomatic mission before making travel arrangements, as immigration policies and procedures may change.
