The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 31-year-old Buriba Israel, a resident of Jambutu in Yola South Local Government Area, over allegations of cyberbullying and criminal intimidation involving First-Class Chief Hamman Bachama, Daniel Samaila.

The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, condemning the use of social media to harass or intimidate traditional rulers and other prominent members of society.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that Israel allegedly created and circulated social media posts containing accusations against the traditional ruler.

“The publications were considered offensive, disparaging, and capable of undermining their reputation and dignity.”

The suspect was reportedly arrested after a formal complaint was lodged, prompting a police investigation into his alleged online activities. The authorities also recovered electronic devices and other materials believed to be connected to the alleged offences, which are currently undergoing forensic examination.

The command reiterated that although citizens have the constitutional right to freedom of expression, such freedom must be exercised within the limits of the law.

“The use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate, defame, or deliberately circulate harmful content against individuals or institutions will not be tolerated,” the command said.

The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa, Kabir Hassan, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter and directed that Israel face the full weight of the law if found culpable.

The police said the command would continue working to protect the dignity of traditional institutions, preserve public order and prevent social media platforms from being used for cyberbullying, criminal intimidation and other unlawful activities.
