Former England international Raheem Sterling is due to appear in court next month after being charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen.
The 31-year-old was charged following a single-vehicle crash involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire in May.
Sterling reportedly crashed into motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange on the southbound carriageway on May 28, 2026.
He was arrested after the incident and subsequently released on bail while investigations continued.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.
“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.
“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange [Hampshire], on 28 May, 2026.
“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.”
Police initially suspected Sterling of “driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs”, although that allegation is not included among the charges he currently faces.
After the crash, a source close to Sterling told BBC Sport there was “no proof” that drugs were present in his system.
The source also said the footballer had endured “an extremely tough couple of years” and had been made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about”.
Sterling is currently without a club after leaving Feyenoord at the end of last season.
He joined the Dutch side on a short-term deal in February after mutually agreeing to part ways with Chelsea.
Chelsea signed Sterling from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022 following his successful seven-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.
During his time with City, Sterling won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup.
He later spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal before returning to Chelsea, where he was left out of the first-team squad and trained separately in 2025.
Sterling began his senior career at Liverpool and went on to earn 82 England caps between 2012 and 2022.
He represented England at three World Cups and two European Championships.
His court appearance at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court is scheduled for September 15.
