Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest after Victor Munoz struck a deflected equaliser to earn the hosts a point at Anfield.
Andoni Iraola looked set to suffer defeat in his first Premier League match at Anfield as Liverpool manager after Morgan Gibbs-White converted a controversial penalty with 20 minutes remaining. However, summer signing Munoz made amends for a difficult first outing in front of the home supporters by firing in a powerful leveller.
Iraola is still waiting for his first victory with Liverpool after his team also surrendered a lead to draw against Newcastle last weekend.
Munoz switched to the right wing shortly before scoring, following the substitution of Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman had looked impressive on that flank despite transfer speculation involving Tottenham and Manchester City. His low delivery across the six-yard box had earlier been converted by Alexander Isak, who had otherwise struggled to make an impact, as Liverpool recovered from a poor first half.
Forest gave Liverpool plenty of problems with their direct style during the opening 45 minutes, with a long ball from Matz Sels leading to Dan Ndoye’s opener.
Liverpool’s defending for the goal was below par, but Forest will regret failing to make more of their opportunities before the break. Alisson produced a crucial save shortly before half-time, tipping Igor Jesus’ effort onto the crossbar.
The lively and entertaining encounter ended all square, leaving both Liverpool and Forest still searching for their first league victories of the season.
