[TRENDING] ‘He may promise to reopen Strait of Hormuz,’ Atiku under fire on X over promises ahead of 2027 election
Some Nigerians on X, formerly known as Twitter, have continued to mock former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over some of his campaign promises ahead of the 2027 general election.
The reactions followed the former vice-president’s recent disclosure of some of the policies he intends to introduce or reverse if elected president in 2027.
On August 19, Atiku said he would restore the petrol subsidy if elected, arguing that the government had not accounted for the funds saved following the subsidy’s removal.
The proposal generated mixed reactions, with members and officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including President Bola Tinubu, criticising the former vice-president.
Atiku had also pledged to reopen Nigeria’s land borders and develop southern ports as part of measures to improve trade.
On September 1, he announced another policy proposal, saying he would reduce the underlying cost of education and introduce forgiveness for qualifying student debts.
Reacting to his various campaign promises, some Nigerians on X resorted to sarcasm, suggesting that Atiku could make further promises such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz in Iran or bringing back the era of university lecturers’ strikes.
The comments included suggestions that Atiku might promise to release Nnamdi Kanu, fund mass weddings and provide other unconventional benefits if elected president.
