Google has unveiled a customised hidden search banner to pay tribute to Lionel Messi following his retirement from the Argentina national football team.
When users search for “Lionel Messi” on Google, they are greeted by a personalised scrolling banner displayed between the search toolbar and the results.
The digital tribute celebrates the lasting impact of the Argentine forward and features a message that reads: “Thank you for everything, captain.”
The 39-year-old Argentina captain officially announced the end of his international career on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Messi announced his decision through an emotional farewell letter and a montage of some of his greatest moments shared on Instagram. He said ending the chapter “hurt deep down”, but described the decision as the right time to make way for a younger generation of players.
Messi had reportedly written his retirement notes on July 21, two days after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
His decision was reportedly further reinforced in August following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.
Messi also faced controversy after sharing a Michelob ULTRA promotional video on Instagram highlighting his career achievements in the style of a bar tab and ending with the phrase: “GOAT debate: settled.”
The statement was widely interpreted as a reference to his long-running rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, prompting criticism from some fans and observers who described the claim as arrogant and lacking humility.
Messi ends his international career after an extraordinary 21-year spell with La Albiceleste, having made his debut for Argentina in 2005.
He leaves as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 125 goals and 68 assists from 207 appearances.
His international career includes a record six World Cup appearances, highlighted by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He also finished as a runner-up in the 2014 and 2026 editions, while winning consecutive Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
Although his international career has ended, Messi is expected to continue playing professional club football in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami CF.
