Ghana have handed Carlos Queiroz another opportunity to lead the national team after the Ghana Football Association confirmed his return as head coach.
The Portuguese manager, 73, will continue in charge of the Black Stars following his recent involvement with the team at the FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz assumed the role in April and oversaw Ghana’s campaign until their elimination in the last 32 after Colombia secured a narrow 1-0 victory.
His future with the team became uncertain after he appeared to indicate on social media that he was leaving the position following the World Cup defeat. However, discussions with the GFA eventually resulted in the decision to retain him.
Although the association has not stated how long his new deal will run, it said Queiroz would be expected to guide Ghana into “a successful new phase on the international stage.”
“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter,” the football body said on Thursday.
Queiroz brings considerable international experience to the position. Before his return to Ghana, he had coached countries including Portugal, Iran and Egypt at major tournaments, while South Africa, Colombia and Qatar are also among the national teams he has managed.
He is also familiar with top-level club football, having served twice as an assistant coach to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
His first major assignment in this latest spell will be Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana have been placed in Group C with Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. Details of the dates and venues for the team’s opening two qualifying matches are yet to be confirmed.
The GFA said it would provide further information on Queiroz’s new mandate at a later date.
