Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have both been sanctioned by UEFA following the post-match confrontation that erupted after Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.
Fenerbahce advanced after beating Lyon 2-1 in the second leg in France last month, securing a 3-2 aggregate triumph. The celebrations, however, were overshadowed by ugly scenes after the final whistle involving players and coaching staff from both clubs.
Guendouzi, who previously represented Marseille and Arsenal, received a four-game suspension from UEFA club competitions.
According to UEFA’s disciplinary ruling released on Friday, the midfielder was banned “for insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.
Two of the four matches will be served under a “one-year probationary period”.
The Frenchman was additionally fined €50,000 over his conduct during the incident. Among the offences cited was a middle-finger gesture directed at Lyon supporters, as well as actions that helped spark the confrontation that followed the game.
Greenwood was also punished for his involvement. The former Manchester United forward was given a one-match suspended ban and fined €30,000 for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.
Both players had previously featured for Marseille, Lyon’s fierce rivals, before joining Fenerbahce.
The disciplinary action brings consequences for the pair after the heated scenes that followed Fenerbahce’s successful trip to Lyon.
