2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup: D’Tigress suffer second defeat, face knockout threat

Nigeria’s D’Tigress suffered their second consecutive defeat at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after losing 71–67 to Hungary in a closely fought Group B match in Berlin on Saturday.

The African champions had hoped to bounce back after their 99–81 opening-day defeat to South Korea, but Hungary held firm during the crucial stages to secure a four-point victory.

D’Tigress remained competitive throughout the game but struggled to convert enough of their opportunities, particularly from the field.

Nigeria made 17 of 44 two-point attempts and seven of 25 three-point attempts, while they converted 12 of 23 free throws. Hungary were more efficient from inside the arc, making 24 of 41 two-point attempts, although they managed just four successful shots from 14 attempts from three-point range.

The defeat leaves D’Tigress without a win from their first two Group B matches and places their hopes of reaching the knockout stage under serious pressure.

Having already lost to South Korea, Nigeria needed a victory over Hungary to strengthen their chances of progressing from the group.

D’Tigress will now face France in their final Group B fixture on Monday, knowing that another difficult challenge awaits.

The African champions must regroup quickly and produce a strong performance against France if they are to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
