A Nigerian man has reportedly had his wife arrested following the death of their newborn daughter, after she allegedly refused to breastfeed the baby until her husband bought her a car as a push gift.
The claim was made by Ossai Ovie Success in a Facebook post, where he narrated the alleged circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.
According to Ossai, the couple had been married for four years without a child before the woman became pregnant. He said both husband and wife were under 28 years old when she conceived.
Ossai claimed the woman gave birth to their first child through a caesarean section (CS) last month after what he described as a difficult delivery that left the husband spending a significant amount of money.
He alleged that three days after the delivery, the woman demanded a car as her push gift. When her husband reportedly told her he could not afford one at the time, she allegedly threatened to stop feeding the baby.
“My friend has been married for 4 years without a child. Both are young and beautiful, both under 28. Last year his wife finally conceived.
“She had one request. A push gift. She wanted her own car. She delivered via CS last month. It was a long, tense delivery and he spent a fortune.
“Three days later, she asked for the car. He told her he could not afford it right now. She said she would not feed the baby until he bought it. Right there in the hospital. The nurses had to beg her.
“At home, things got worse. He would return from work to find the baby crying alone. She stopped breastfeeding unless he begged. She withheld care like a weapon.
“Then she disappeared for 2 days. He found out she was at her mother’s place
The account further claimed that the baby became seriously ill, prompting the father to ask his wife to return home. According to Ossai, she allegedly refused until he agreed to buy the car.
The woman reportedly returned home, but the baby died a few days later after failing to recover from the illness.
Ossai claimed the husband subsequently sent his wife away before she later returned with her mother to plead with him. He alleged that the man then had both women arrested.
The claims have not been independently verified, and details surrounding the baby’s death, the alleged neglect and the reported arrests remain unclear.
