One person has died and four others have been rescued after a four-storey building under construction collapsed on Ogbalu Street, Independence Layout, Enugu State.

The building reportedly collapsed at about 6am on Sunday while workers were sleeping at the construction site.

Four workers were rescued from the rubble, while the body of another person was recovered.

The Enugu State Capital Territory said the rescued workers were receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital.

It added that one of the six people who had been sleeping at the site had stepped out shortly before the building collapsed.

The National Emergency Management Agency, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the police are currently involved in rescue operations at the site.

The cause of the collapse had yet to be established as of press time.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of buildings under construction and the effectiveness of regulatory monitoring and enforcement.

Rescue operations are continuing as emergency agencies search the debris for any other possible victims.
