At least 15 people have lost their lives in separate attacks on communities in Plateau State, with nine passengers among those killed after gunmen reportedly attacked a vehicle heading to Jos.
The attacks occurred on Sunday night across Jos South, Mangu and Riyom Local Government Areas.
In Dungus, Jos South LGA, nine passengers were reportedly killed when suspected terrorists opened fire on their vehicle. Several others were injured and taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed the incident, saying the passengers were on their way to Jos when the attackers struck.
He said, “The incident happened around 9.40 p.m. The victims were all passengers travelling to Jos when the terrorists opened fire on the vehicle. Among those killed was a member of Operation Rainbow. It is a very sad development, and we lament the loss of lives.”
Tengwong said some of those wounded in the attack were taken to hospitals, adding that some later died from their injuries.
“It was a vehicle carrying passengers to Jos. The attackers opened fire on them, and some of the victims were killed,” he said.
A resident, Musa Dauda, also confirmed that some of the injured victims died while receiving medical attention.
Dauda said, “Some of the passengers who were injured were taken to the hospital, but some of them died while receiving treatment. Others are still in the hospital receiving treatment.”
Meanwhile, two people were reportedly killed when suspected terrorists attacked Vodni community in the Pushit District of Mangu LGA.
Four other victims sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to a hospital in Mangu town.
A separate attack was also reported in Tahoos, Riyom LGA, where two people were said to have been killed.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, and Operation Enduring Peace Media Officer, Chinonso Oteh, had yet to respond to enquiries about the attacks.
