Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived back in Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi, India.
Shettima’s trip included a series of high-level meetings aimed at deepening Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic ties, particularly with India, while exploring opportunities in trade, investment and technology.
As part of the engagements, the Vice President met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with both leaders discussing the renewal of crude oil trade and collaboration in pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, renewable energy and other key sectors.
Shettima also held talks with the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, during which he reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and efforts towards building a more inclusive global economic system.
At the BRICS summit, Shettima delivered President Tinubu’s message advocating reforms to global governance structures and international financial institutions.
He also presented Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Nigeria further used the summit to deepen its engagement with BRICS member and partner countries across sectors including agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and human capital development.
