Manchester City cruised into the fourth round of the EFL Cup after sweeping aside Norwich City 5-0, with teenage debutant Floyd Samba scoring twice.
Rayan Cherki, Ryan McAidoo and fellow debutant Allan were also on target as City comfortably dispatched their Championship opponents with a much-changed side.
Samba opened the scoring in the 29th minute, converting a diving header after Allan kept an overhit cross alive inside the Norwich penalty area.
City doubled their advantage three minutes later when Cherki was played through before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw.
Allan then marked his debut with a goal early in the second half, cutting inside after receiving Rayan Ait-Nouri’s pass before firing into the far corner. The Brazilian midfielder joined City from Palmeiras last month for a reported £34.2m.
Samba completed his brace in the 54th minute, curling a low effort into the bottom corner after Norwich surrendered possession.
Norwich briefly threatened to pull one back, but their efforts came to nothing. Substitute Mohamed Toure also had a goal ruled out for offside before McAidoo completed the scoring in the 90th minute after a clever dummy from Rico Lewis.
City manager Enzo Maresca made 10 changes from the team that defeated Manchester United in Sunday’s derby, with Cherki the only player retained in the starting XI.
Despite the extensive rotation, City dominated proceedings, enjoying 65.9 per cent possession and restricting Norwich to only four attempts.
The victory extended City’s remarkable run in the EFL Cup against lower-league opposition, with the holders now having progressed from 19 consecutive ties since their penalty shootout defeat by then-third-tier Brighton in the 2008-09 second round.
City will face Brighton in the fourth round, with the Seagulls heading back to Manchester after their 3-2 comeback victory over United.
