A Nigerian father has lamented the rising cost of university education after the acceptance fee for his second child’s admission to the same university jumped from ₦40,000 to ₦105,000.
The father said he paid ₦40,000 when his first child gained admission into the institution, but is now required to pay ₦105,000 for his second child.
“Nigerian university fees is now unbearable. I previously paid an acceptance fee of N40,000 for my first child. Now my second child just gained admission into the same university, and the acceptance fee is now N105,000,” he lamented.
Expressing concern over how he would raise the money, the father said his monthly earnings were barely enough to meet his family’s needs.
“How much is my salary? I earn the minimum wage of ₦77,000. How am I going to pay the ₦105,000 acceptance fee? Yet, you all said we should stand on the mandate.”
His complaint highlights the financial pressure facing parents as the cost of tertiary education continues to rise, with families also having to cater for tuition, accommodation, textbooks, transportation and other school expenses.
The situation has renewed concerns about the affordability of university education for low-income families struggling to keep their children in school.
