“Sweet roasted corn under rain of love,” How The Okais moment of shield during heavy downpour in Lokoja turned them to forever life partners

16

The Okais are not the only couples that have caught the love bug in their moment of shield during an heavy downpour. However, like other couples that have shared their love stories with us, the Okais simply turned a moment of discomfort into spontaneous friendship.

With a roasted corn in hand, both were simply lost in that moment of conversation that would later become a building block for a lasting relationship.

It was not enough to have a random-on-the spot conversation. What matters more is would any of the parties, particularly, the man be bold enough to seek extension by courteously requesting for the lady’s contact? Mr Okai did that and as if she had been waiting to be asked, his gist partner did not hesitate to release her digits.

As we have for long maintained her, serious single and searching men and women should always be open minded as their Mr or Mrs Right could be standing next to them in the most unconventional places they can think of.

No prospective partner will be receptive to an hostile person who could not even live up to the first rule of engagement.

Let’s dive deep into the special meeting adventures of The Okais and see one or two lessons that intending lovers can pick.

1. Can you take us back to how your love story started?

Mr Okai: It started with roasted corn and rain. I was on my way back from work in Lokoja when the rain became too heavy, so I stopped at a small roadside spot to wait.

Mrs Okai: I was also there waiting for the rain to reduce. There were only a few people around, and we started talking because everyone was complaining about how the weather had changed their plans.

Mr Okai: We laughed about the situation, then started gisting and before leaving, I asked if we could keep in touch.

2. What was the moment you knew “this is the one”?

Mr Okai: I love how I could be myself around her. I didn’t have to pretend to have everything figured out. She encouraged me but never made me feel less.

Mrs Okai: I noticed how he treated people who could do nothing for him. He was respectful to everyone, and that told me a lot about his character.

3. How many years have you been together?

Mr Okai: We have been together for 10 years.

Mrs Okai: We have been married for 8 years.

4. What has been your secret to keeping the spark alive all these years, especially after the arrival of kids?

Mr Okai: We don’t compete with each other. We understand that we are on the same side.

Mrs Okai: We also make room for friendship. Sometimes we just sit and talk like we did when we first met.

5. How do you both make each other feel special, even in small ways? What fun habits have stayed with you throughout your marriage?

Mr Okai: She knows when I need encouragement. She may not have all the answers, but she knows how to make me feel better.

Mrs Okai: He finds ways to make me laugh, even when I’m tired. Another thing is how we tease each other about who fell in love first.

6. How do you handle disagreements or tough moments now, compared to your early years?

Mr Okai: Before, we wanted to settle issues immediately, when emotions were high.

Mrs Okai: Now we understand that taking time to calm down can help you have a better conversation.

7. What’s one thing your partner still does that melts your heart?

Mr Okai: She remembers my struggles. She knows where I started from and always reminds me of how far I have come.

Mrs Okai: He puts my needs into consideration when making decisions. It makes me feel like I truly have a partner.

8. What was one of the biggest challenges you faced together, and how did you overcome it?

Mr Okai: One major challenge was adjusting to the responsibilities that came with building our own family.

Mrs Okai: We learned that nobody knows everything about marriage at the beginning. We grew by learning from each other.

9. What advice would you give to younger couples hoping for a lasting marriage?

Mr Okai: Don’t let pride destroy something valuable. Sometimes love requires you to choose peace.

Mrs Okai: Pay attention to the small things. Big moments are beautiful, but daily kindness is what builds a home.

10. If you could sum up your marriage in one word or sentence, what would it be?

Mr Okai: Journey.

Mrs Okai: A journey of two imperfect people choosing each other every day.
