Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died at the age of 77.
Idris reportedly died in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Details surrounding his death were not immediately available.
Following his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Abdullahi Bello and other government officials visited his residence in Abuja to condole with his family.
Onogwu Muhammed, Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Public Relations and Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Yahaya Bello, disclosed the visit in a Facebook post accompanied by photographs of Ododo and Bello at the residence.
He wrote, “Kogi State Governor, His Excellency Ahmed Usman Ododo; former Governor Yahaya Bello, CON; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Abdullahi Bello; and other top government officials have arrived at the Abuja residence of the late former Governor Ibrahim Idris, who passed away this afternoon.”
Idris governed Kogi for nine years
Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He first took office in May 2003 after defeating the then-incumbent governor, Abubakar Audu, and won another term in 2007. His second-term election was later nullified, but he returned to office after a re-run election in March 2008.
He completed his tenure in January 2012 and was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada.
Idris, popularly known as Ibro, remained an influential figure in Kogi politics after leaving office.
His death has prompted condolences from political figures and associates in the state. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, described his death as a loss to Kogi State and the PDP.
Details of funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
