Police have arrested a Nigerian man captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a toddler for failing to read.
The disturbing footage, which gained significant attention on social media, showed the suspect repeatedly hitting the child on the head and body with what appeared to be a charger cable.
The video triggered widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians demanding that the man be arrested and prosecuted for the alleged abuse.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The agency said the arrest followed a report of the incident and subsequent contact with the child’s mother.
In a statement, the agency disclosed that the mother informed officials that the matter had already been reported at the Imota Police Station.
“Upon contacting officers at the Family Support Unit, the Agency was informed that the survivor’s mother had initially reported the matter to the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.
“Following the report, the alleged perpetrator was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and is currently in police custody, as the matter has now been escalated for further investigation.
“The survivor and her mother have also been referred to the General Hospital for immediate medical attention and further assessment,” the statement read.
The agency added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
