Nigerian music video director TG Omori has opened up about the emotional ordeal surrounding his battle with kidney failure, revealing that his brother donated one of his kidneys to him after a nine-month search for a suitable donor.
Omori said his family spent about nine months searching for a compatible donor before his brother eventually volunteered to donate his kidney.
However, the transplant did not go as planned.
According to the filmmaker, doctors later discovered that the kidney was not a match and that his body was not accepting the donated organ.
He said doctors made another attempt to get the kidney to respond, but the situation remained unsuccessful.
The experience, he said, was particularly painful because of the sacrifice his brother had made to give him a chance at survival.
Omori noted that his brother now has to live with only one kidney after undergoing the procedure to donate the organ.
“My brother gave me his kidney after it took us nine months to find a donor. The doctor told me it wasn’t a match and my body wasn’t accepting it. The doctor tried again, but it wasn’t responding. My brother still has to live with only one kidney,” he said.
The revelation adds to Omori’s previous accounts of the difficult period he endured while battling kidney failure, including the financial burden of dialysis, surgery and eventually securing a successful transplant.
The filmmaker has previously revealed that he underwent regular dialysis while waiting for a suitable donor, with the treatment costing hundreds of thousands of naira in some weeks.
His account has continued to draw attention to the physical, emotional and financial challenges faced by patients undergoing kidney treatment, as well as the sacrifices made by family members who step forward as potential donors.
