Mr Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore announced his return in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday.
He said he was excited to be reunited with his family and return to Nigeria after spending more than 20 months in the United States.
According to him, his departure from Nigeria followed what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.
During his time in the United States, Sowore said he engaged Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on national issues and his political agenda.
He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his campaign for voting rights for Nigerians residing abroad.
The AAC presidential candidate reiterated his commitment to ensuring that Nigerians in the diaspora are able to participate in the country’s democratic process.
He said an AAC government would introduce diaspora voting if elected president in 2027.
Sowore said he was scheduled to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before travelling to Abuja.
He added that he would continue attending court proceedings relating to the cybercrime case filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025.
The presidential candidate said his return signalled a new phase of his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
“I plan to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country, ” he said.
According to him, the engagements would address political, social and economic issues outlined in the AAC’s 2027 agenda.
He said the campaign would mobilise Nigerians around issues such as equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.
Sowore stated that the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to determine the direction of the country’s political leadership.
“My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation, ” he said.
The AAC candidate reaffirmed his commitment to taking his campaign message directly to Nigerians across the country.
“I will continue the campaign and engagements with Nigerians as the 2027 election approaches, “he said.
