Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have killed a suspected terrorist in Sokoto State and thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Zamfara State, rescuing six members of the same family.
In Sokoto State, troops from Sector 2 conducted a raid on a suspected terrorist hideout near Karani village in Gudu Local Government Area after receiving credible intelligence about terrorist activities in the area.
The troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them in a gun battle, killing one suspected terrorist while others escaped into the nearby forest.
During the operation, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with live ammunition, a motorcycle believed to be used for operations, military camouflage uniforms, maintenance equipment and other logistical items.
In a statement issued on Sunday, spokesman for the 8 Division, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the troops responded with “decisive firepower” during the encounter.
He said, “The successful operation demonstrates the resolve and capability of troops of Operation Fansan Yamma to disrupt terrorist activities and deny them freedom of action within the theatre.
“No fewer than six persons were rescued by the troops in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto in the process,” he added.
Osoba said the troops also commenced clearance operations in the surrounding forest to prevent the fleeing terrorists from regrouping.
He said, “Following the encounter, troops executed clearance operations in the surrounding forest axis to dominate the general area and deny fleeing elements freedom of action.”
In a separate operation in Zamfara State, troops of 17 Brigade, operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, stopped a kidnapping attempt and rescued six members of the same family in Tsafe Local Government Area.
The troops responded to reports of an ongoing attack and engaged the armed terrorists, forcing them to retreat and leave the victims behind.
The six family members were rescued unharmed and moved to a secure location, where they received care before being reunited with their relatives.
The operations form part of the ongoing efforts by Operation Fansan Yamma to dismantle terrorist networks, curb kidnapping activities and strengthen security across the North-West.
