Spain defeat North Korea on penalties, win 2026 U20 Women’s World Cup

Spain have won the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after defeating North Korea 4–3 on penalties on Sunday.

The final, played at the National Stadium in Warsaw, finished goalless after 120 minutes, sending the contest into a penalty shootout to determine the champions.

Both teams produced disciplined defensive performances throughout regulation time and extra time, cancelling each other out despite sustained pressure.

Spain remained composed during the shootout, converting four penalties to edge past North Korea and secure the title.

Spain’s victory completed an unbeaten campaign in which they impressed from the group stage through to the final.

Drawn in Group F, Spain finished top with maximum points, scoring 16 goals and conceding just once in three matches. Their group-stage campaign included an 11–0 victory over New Caledonia and a 3–1 win against China.

In the knockout stages, Spain defeated Portugal 2–0 in the round of 16 before edging Brazil 1–0 in the quarter-finals.

They then overcame Italy 2–0 in the semi-finals to book their place in the final.

Spain finished the tournament without losing a match, combining defensive organisation with efficient attacking play throughout the competition.

North Korea had also enjoyed an impressive campaign, topping Group E with three victories without conceding a goal.

However, they settled for the silver medal after Spain prevailed in the decisive penalty shootout.

The triumph further strengthens Spain’s position in women’s youth international football and adds another FIFA title to their collection.
