The family of late Afrobeats singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has confirmed that the police have commenced a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the family’s petition requesting a comprehensive review of the case, according to a statement by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe.

Ogungbe said the petition was submitted to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and formally received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.

The family had raised concerns over alleged inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and requested a detailed forensic examination of the events surrounding the singer’s death.

Following the approval, the petition was sent to the Lagos State Police Command, where it was assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau.

The lawyer said a representative of the family had already met with the new investigative team and that the family had remained in contact with the officers handling the matter.

“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter.

“The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process,” the lawyer disclosed.

The development comes days after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026.

However, Ogungbe clarified that the dismissed case was distinct from the petition submitted by the Aloba family and was not filed with the family’s authorisation.

“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement noted.

The family maintained that the court’s decision had no bearing on the police investigation arising from its petition.

It also promised to provide investigators with relevant documents, information and witnesses that could assist in establishing the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The family called for the investigation to be conducted independently and professionally, with all relevant individuals and circumstances thoroughly examined.

According to the lawyers, the family was not attempting to determine the outcome of the investigation beforehand or engage in “trial by media,” but was seeking a transparent process capable of establishing what happened.

“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.
