Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately begin remedial work on the collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The move is intended to reduce the difficulties being experienced by motorists, residents and businesses after erosion caused by heavy rainfall damaged the Federal Government-owned road.

The state Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday.

Aniagwu said the governor was worried about the disruption caused by the road failure and therefore instructed Julius Berger to intervene, even though the affected road is under the Federal Government.

He said, “Although the East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure, the governor is concerned about the hardship being experienced by Deltans and other Nigerians using the corridor.

“Consequently, he has directed Julius Berger to immediately intervene and undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road.”

According to the commissioner, the intervention demonstrates the administration’s commitment to addressing urgent infrastructure problems based on the needs of the people.

“For us, governance should be driven by the needs of the people and not by bureaucratic boundaries,” Aniagwu stated.

He described the East-West Road as an important economic route in the Niger Delta, connecting communities and facilitating the movement of people, farm produce, goods and services.

Aniagwu noted that the damaged section could disrupt commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses along the corridor.

He assured motorists and other road users that the remedial intervention would improve traffic flow and ease the difficulties resulting from the collapse.

The commissioner also said the state government would continue collaborating with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to tackle infrastructure problems affecting residents and economic activities.

Meanwhile, motorists were advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected section while the remedial work continues.
