The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collected N1.2 trillion in revenue during the first half (H1) of 2026.
According to NERC’s second-quarter report for 2026, the figure represents a 7.1% increase from the N1.12 trillion recorded in H1 2025.
“The total revenue collected by all DisCos in 2026/Q2 was N603.64 billion out of the N744.67 billion that was billed to customers. This translates to a collection efficiency of 81.06%,” the report reads.
“In comparison, the total revenue collected by all DisCos in 2026/Q1 was N597.56 billion out of the N756.93 billion billed to customers, which translated to a 78.95% collection efficiency.”
NERC said the figures resulted in a 2.11 percentage-point increase in the aggregate collection efficiency between the first and second quarters.
“In 2026/Q2, Benin DisCo recorded the highest collection efficiency of 92.68% while five (5) other DisCos recorded collection efficiencies greater than 80.00% (Ikeja; 92.20%, Eko; 89.39%, Port Harcourt; 87.27%, Abuja; 83.45%, and Ibadan; 80.33%),” the report said.
“Conversely, Kano DisCo recorded the lowest collection efficiency at 47.74%. A comparison of DisCos’ performance shows that Enugu (9.03pp), Benin (7.52pp), Kaduna (6.35pp), Port Harcourt (6.05pp), Ibadan (5.22pp), Abuja (2.56pp) and Ikeja (2.20pp) DisCos recorded improvements in collection efficiency between 2026/Q1 and 2026/Q2.
“Conversely, the remaining four (4) DisCos recorded declines in collection efficiency, with Kano DisCo (-15.02pp) having the most significant decline across the quarters.”
Togo, Benin, Niger customers paid $8.67m of Q2 electricity bill
NERC said three international bilateral customers in Togo, Benin Republic and Niger paid $8.67 million out of a combined $18.84 million invoice for electricity supplied by generation companies (GenCos) during the second quarter.
The payment represented a “remittance performance of 46.02%”, leaving an outstanding balance of $10.17 million.
The commission added that domestic bilateral customers paid N6.91 billion against an N7.55 billion invoice issued by the market operator (MO) for services provided in Q2, representing a “91.54% remittance performance”.
Customers paid $10.33m for outstanding Q1 invoices
The commission said the three international bilateral customers also paid $10.33 million during Q2 towards settling outstanding MO invoices from the first quarter.
NERC said the MO received a total of “$7.01 million from Société Béninoise d’Energie Electrique (SBEE), comprising payments for Ughelli ($3.30 million), Paras ($1.94 million), and Afam 3 ($1.77 million)”.
“In addition, $1.67 million was received from Paras – Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET) and $1.65 million from Mainstream- Société Nigérienne d’Electricité (NIGELEC),” the NERC said.
Ajaokuta Steel made no payments
The commission said Ajaokuta Steel Co. Ltd and “the host community”, classified as a special customer, made no payments towards invoices issued by Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) Plc and the MO during Q2.
According to NERC, the customer received invoices of N1.18 billion from NBET and N171.04 million from the MO.
The commission said the zero payment “continues a longstanding trend of non-payment by this customer”, adding that it had informed relevant federal government authorities about the need for intervention.
