JUST IN: WAEC appoints Amos Dangut as new registrar, CEO

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

Dangut previously served as Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. He will serve a five-year term from October 2026 to September 2031, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by WAEC Headquarters’ Head of Public Affairs, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Dangut’s appointment was ratified by the Council’s international governing board during its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. He officially assumed office as the 14th Registrar on October 1, 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He began his education career in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998.

Over the years, he has held several positions within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security, Deputy Branch Controller, Branch Controller, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator and Deputy Registrar/Head of National Office.

With more than two decades of experience, Dangut has been involved in using Information and Communications Technology to improve examination development, administration and post-examination processes.

As Head of the Nigeria National Office, he led initiatives including the introduction of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also supervised the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, as well as systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

Throughout his career, Dangut has received recognition for his contributions to education and examination administration. He has also served on the boards of NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB and the Grange Educational Foundation, while representing WAEC at various national education bodies.

He has published articles in national and international journals and presented papers at several conferences. He currently represents the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).
