Faith-based Nollywood film “Agbara Nla: The Return”, a remake of the 1993 classic “Agbara Nla”, has grossed more than ₦71 million to top the Nigerian box office chart for the week.
The film, which opened in cinemas on October 1, was produced through a collaboration between Mount Zion Film Productions, Sozo Films and Circuits.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Damilola Mike-Bamiloye, one of the film’s co-directors, announced the achievement on his official Instagram page, @damilolamikebamiloye.
In a post celebrating the film’s performance, Bamiloye credited God for the success of the project.
“LORD! WE GIVE YOU THE GLORY!!! “From pre-production to production, post-production, and distribution, we have seen the faithfulness of God every step of the way. “What began as a vision has become a reality, and we know that God alone made it possible. “Through every challenge, every breakthrough, every delay, every provision, and every open door, His hand has been evident. “We give all the glory, honour, and praise to Jesus Christ for the journey of AGBARA NLA – The Return. This is God’s doing, and we are grateful.”
Thanking fans and supporters of the “Agbara Nla” franchise, Bamiloye wrote, “THANK YOU, NIGERIA. NUMBER 1 MOVIE OF THE WEEK.”
He also highlighted several box office milestones achieved by the film.
“BIGGEST SINGLE-DAY GROSS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER. “THE BIGGEST FAITH-BASED OPENER OF ALL TIME. “BIGGEST SINGLE-DAY PREVIEWS EVER IN WEST AFRICA (₦71M+). “THE BIGGEST FIRST DAY GROSS FOR A NOLLYWOOD TITLE EVER. “BIGGEST PREVIEWS ADMISSIONS FOR 2026 (12,100+). AGBARA NLA!”
The film’s performance has drawn attention within the Nigerian film industry, while also marking a notable milestone for faith-based cinema in West Africa.
Early analytics indicate that “Agbara Nla: The Return” recorded strong performances across major cinema circuits, with fan engagement, community mobilisation and social media activity contributing to its opening.
Entertainment analysts have described the performance as the largest single-day preview gross recorded by a Nollywood title in West African box office history.
Following confirmation of the milestone, fans took to social media to congratulate the filmmakers and commend the production quality and emotional appeal of the movie.
Although official box office trackers are still updating their weekly figures, the film’s early performance has generated significant attention as it continues its cinema run.
“Agbara Nla: The Return” continues the faith-based storyline that has connected with audiences across the region.
NAN reports that the original “Agbara Nla”, also known as “The Ultimate Power”, was released in 1993 and became one of the widely recognised Christian films in Nigeria and beyond.
The original film explored spiritual warfare and the conflict between good and evil through themes involving witchcraft, occult practices and demonic forces.
It also highlighted faith, prayer, evangelism, obedience and commitment within marriage and ministry.
According to the producers, “Agbara Nla: The Return” brings the story to a new generation while retaining its central message about the supremacy of God’s power over evil.
The remake was directed by Damilola Bamiloye and Joshua Bamiloye and features Philip Olubakin as Olaboye, Damilola Bamiloye as Kola and Aanu Kolade-Abiodun as Bose. Mike Bamiloye also reprises his well-known role as Isawuru.
