Nigeria’s entertainment industry has produced several reality television programmes that have captivated audiences, discovered new talents and helped launch successful careers.

Over the years, some of these shows disappeared from television, leaving many viewers hoping for their return. With Gulder Ultimate Search having made a comeback, memories of other popular reality programmes have resurfaced.

Here are some Nigerian reality shows many viewers would love to see return to television.

1. Maltina Dance All (2007–2016)

Maltina Dance All became one of Nigeria’s most popular family-oriented reality television shows, bringing families from different backgrounds together to showcase their dancing abilities.

The programme began with individual auditions, after which successful contestants introduced their families to the competition. The participating families went through different stages, including household visits and dance challenges, before competing for the grand prize.

The show featured several dance styles, including salsa, hip-hop, jive, gumboot, pantomime and Wazobia, while also promoting cultural diversity and family unity.

Kemi Adetiba and Osas Ighodaro were among the hosts, while Muyiwa Osinaike, Jeffery Page, Jarnell Burgess and Bimbo Obafunwai served as judges.

The Onye family won the first edition, while the Opuwari family emerged victorious in the second. The programme eventually ended after its ninth season, with the Adah family winning the final edition.

2. MTN Project Fame (2008–2016)

MTN Project Fame provided a platform for young and aspiring musicians seeking to establish themselves in the music industry.

The competition brought together contestants from across West Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The first edition premiered on July 18, 2008, with Iyanya emerging as the winner. Following weeks of auditions, the strongest contestants were selected for the Gala stage.

Joseph Benjamin hosted the programme alongside Adaora Oleh, who was later replaced by Bolanle Olukanni. Joke Silva, Dupe Ige and Ben Ogbeiwi were among the faculty members, while Praiz, Bibie Brew and Tee-Y Mix served as judges.

The programme helped launch the careers of several Nigerian artistes, including Praiz, Iyanya, Chidinma and Ayoola Ayolola.

After nine seasons, the show ended in 2016 following MTN’s withdrawal of sponsorship.

3. Koko Mansion (2009–2011)

In 2009, Nigerian musician Dbanj launched Koko Mansion in partnership with HiTV.

The name was derived from Dbanj’s popular slang ‘kokolette’, which he used to describe a well-endowed and accomplished woman.

The eight-week reality programme brought young women from different parts of Nigeria together for a series of tasks and activities.

The first season featured 12 contestants living together in a mansion in Lagos, where they were tested and groomed through various challenges.

The contestant judged to possess the best Koko virtues won prizes that included a Chris Aire diamond ring, a convertible car and N5 million.

Bolanle Okhira, winner of the first edition, said: “I learned a lot from the Kokolet mansion. Etiquettes on how to be composed as a lady outside the mansion and the creative tasks that brought out my creative side. It also helped boost my presenting career”.

Dbanj hinted at the possible return of the programme in 2018, but no comeback followed.

4. Nigeria’s Got Talent (2012–2014)

Nigeria’s Got Talent was based on the British reality television franchise of the same name and was sponsored by Airtel Nigeria.

Unlike programmes focused on specific forms of entertainment, the show provided a platform for contestants with talents across different areas.

Contestants competed through live auditions, with judges deciding who advanced to subsequent stages. The eventual winner was determined through votes from viewers.

Amarachi, who was eight years old at the time, won the first season, while Robots for Christ emerged victorious in the second season before the programme stopped airing.

5. Gulder Ultimate Search

Gulder Ultimate Search became one of Nigeria’s most popular survival reality programmes, putting contestants through physically and mentally demanding challenges.

Produced by Olakunle Oyeneye, the show took contestants to remote locations where they competed for several weeks, relying on available resources while completing daily tasks.

The challenges eventually led contestants towards a hunt for the Gulder Ultimate treasure.

The programme also helped launch the careers of several personalities, including Chris Okagbue, winner of the eighth edition, and Kunle Remi, winner of the seventh edition. Both later established themselves as actors in Nollywood.

The programme first premiered in 2004 and had 12 seasons before its most recent run ended in 2021.

6. Project Fame West Africa

Many viewers may not know that Bisola Aiyeola made her first reality television appearance on Project Fame West Africa, rather than Big Brother Naija.

R&B singer Chike also appeared on the programme before later participating in The Voice Nigeria.

Produced by Ultima Limited, Project Fame West Africa, also known as MTN Project Fame West Africa, became one of the region’s prominent music talent competitions after its launch in 2008.

The programme brought contestants from different West African countries together as they competed to become the overall winner.

Several successful artistes emerged from the show, including Iyanya, Praiz, Niniola, Chidinma Ekile, Johnny Drille and Ayoola Ayolola.

After nine seasons, the programme aired its final series in 2016.

7. Idols West Africa and Nigerian Idol

Idols West Africa followed the wider Idols franchise and brought contestants from across West Africa together in pursuit of the top prize.

Nigeria’s first and only edition of Idols West Africa was held in 2007, with Timi Dakolo winning the competition and Omawunmi finishing as the first runner-up.

Three years later, Nigerian Idol was introduced as another version of the Idols franchise.

The programme has provided a platform for several singers to showcase their talents. Among its notable alumni is gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, who won the second season.

8. The Voice Nigeria

The Voice Nigeria became another major singing competition that combined musical performances with extensive training.

Contestants underwent activities such as vocal coaching and dance rehearsals as they competed for an opportunity to establish themselves in the music industry.

The programme premiered on April 10, 2016, and concluded its fourth season in May 2023.

It also produced several notable artistes, including Chike, Nonzo Bassey and the DNA Twins.

Why these shows remain memorable

Beyond their entertainment value, many of these programmes created opportunities for Nigerians with different talents to gain national recognition.

Some produced musicians and actors who have gone on to build successful careers, while others brought families and communities together through competition and entertainment.

With some reality shows returning after years away from television, fans of these programmes may still hope to see some of Nigeria’s other beloved reality shows make a comeback.
