Afrobeats singer Mayorkun has explained why the end of a friendship can be more painful than the breakdown of a romantic relationship.
Speaking on the In My Opinion podcast, the singer, known for his hit song ‘Let Me Know’, said friendships require a deeper emotional investment because they are not sustained by romance or sexual attraction.
According to him, while romantic relationships often involve a sexual connection that helps bind partners together, friendships are founded solely on genuine affection and companionship.
“Friendship breakups are harder than relationship breakups because you invest more into friendship,” he said.
“You are not really getting anything from friendship apart from maybe companionship and all. But in a relationship, there is still a small sexual something inside. In friendship, you must like that person before they become your friend.”
Mayorkun added that people stay in friendships not for material gain, but because they truly value the other person, which makes the loss more difficult to process.
He argued that it is easier to find a new romantic partner than to replace a close friend.
“So, if the thing ends, don’t worry, you will get a new girlfriend before you get a new friend,” he said.
“A friendship breakup makes it hard to want to go into another friendship with someone, except you are the type that calls everyone your friend,” he concluded.
