Man United considers disciplinary action against Martinez over chiefs’ criticism

Manchester United are weighing disciplinary measures against Lisandro Martínez after the defender publicly challenged the club’s leadership over its transfer decisions.

The Argentine centre-back spoke out following United’s 2-0 Champions League loss to Atlético Madrid, expressing disappointment with the club’s summer recruitment and calling for greater investment in the squad.

During a post-match interview with Amazon Prime, Martínez also questioned the role of technical director Jason Wilcox, arguing that the club’s problems should not be blamed solely on the manager and players.

“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martínez said. “I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director. Tonight it is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”

The defender maintained his position in a subsequent interview, declaring that he would not “close my mouth” while stressing the need for stronger ambition at Old Trafford.

A report by The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell on Wednesday indicated that United were preparing to impose a financial penalty on the 28-year-old. The report also suggested that dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer strategy extends beyond Martínez, with other members of the squad reportedly sharing his concerns.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano similarly reported on Wednesday that Martínez was not alone in questioning the club’s direction, adding that United were considering possible disciplinary action against him.

“Lisandro Martínez, not the only player at Manchester United with that view of the situation at club level. Man United assessing possible sanction/fine for Licha, as reports. Out of contract in June 2027 but club option until 2028.”

The defender’s contract is due to expire in June 2027, but United can extend the agreement by another year. However, the prospect of a fresh long-term deal is reportedly becoming increasingly unlikely.

United are scheduled to face Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday, with Martínez’s public criticism adding to the pressure on the club’s leadership following their European defeat.
