Nollywood actress Damilola Adegbite has challenged societal expectations that men should hide their emotions, insisting that crying does not diminish their masculinity.

The actress made this known in a video posted on her Instagram page, where she reacted to a viral clip showing a man repeatedly affirming his masculinity after being asked whether he was crying.

Adegbite questioned why men are expected to conceal their emotions simply because they are male, maintaining that she disagrees with the belief that men should not cry.

“I do not subscribe to the idea that men should not cry,” she said.

She further argued that crying is a natural human reaction and should never be interpreted as a sign of weakness.

“God forbid, crying should make you feel like less of a man,” she added.

According to the actress, societal expectations have conditioned men to project strength and suppress their vulnerabilities, even when dealing with emotional struggles.

Adegbite explained that if her partner broke down in tears, she would offer him comfort and allow him to express his feelings without judging him.

She also advocated creating safe spaces where men can openly discuss their emotions without fear of ridicule or criticism.

The actress warned that constantly suppressing emotions could contribute to anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges.

She urged men to distance themselves from relationships and environments where they feel unable to express their emotions freely, emphasising that vulnerability should not be mistaken for weakness.
