Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called on politicians to remain steadfast in their faith, warning against allowing political interests to interfere with their relationship with God.
He made the remarks on Saturday in Abuja after receiving a Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during its 50th anniversary celebration at the National Christian Centre.
CAN President Daniel Okoh presented the award to Oborevwori in recognition of his contributions to governance, integrity, responsible leadership and the promotion of Christian values.
Reacting to the honour, the governor expressed appreciation, saying the recognition had further strengthened his resolve to serve the people and contribute to humanity.
“My faith and commitment to serving the people and humanity remain strong. It is a great honour to be recognised, particularly by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN),” he said.
“When an organisation such as CAN gives you an award, it means a lot because the recognition is based not merely on public service but also on integrity, character and the impact you have made.”
Oborevwori stressed that holding political office should not distract leaders from their spiritual obligations, insisting that their responsibilities to God must remain distinct from political activities.
“We may be involved in politics, but we must be able to distinguish between serving God and playing politics. These are two different responsibilities, and we must never allow politics to undermine our commitment to God,” he said.
He noted that his belief in serving both God and humanity had continued to shape his approach to public service.
The governor also advocated stronger cooperation among Christian groups, expressing confidence that greater unity within the community would help advance national development.
“If they remain united and speak with one voice, I believe they can contribute significantly to the development of the country. Their unity will strengthen the Christian community and, in turn, contribute to a more united Nigeria,” he said.
He further urged people to approach religious service with genuine commitment, adding that the desire for personal gain or recognition should not be the motivation for serving God.
