The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee (JDC), chaired by Chief Judge Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, has discharged and acquitted 80 inmates at the Yolde-Pate Correctional Centre in Yola South Local Government Area.

The beneficiaries comprised 55 inmates awaiting trial and 25 convicted persons, most of whom were freed on medical and compassionate grounds.

The committee also granted bail to 51 awaiting-trial inmates and convicted 69 others after considering their pleas. It further reduced sentences in several cases related to civil matters.

The sentence reviews saw some jail terms reduced from 17 years to four years, six years to two years, and five years to six months, among other adjustments.

Addressing the inmates after the exercise, Abdulrahaman urged those released to shun criminal activities, maintain good conduct and engage in productive ventures.

She congratulated the freed inmates and encouraged those still in custody to remain disciplined, maintain good behaviour and accept their circumstances in good faith while awaiting their eventual release.

The latest exercise brings the total to 237 inmates whose cases the committee has determined across the correctional facilities covered by the exercise.

The committee had earlier discharged 55 awaiting-trial inmates, granted bail to 51 others and convicted 69 inmates after reviewing their cases at the same correctional centre.
