“From housewarming guests to friends, lovers and Mr & Mrs,” How The Oladipos ‘gisted’ themselves into love in less than two years

25

It all started with a simple conversation. Nothing at the utterance of the first word suggested it was going to be a forever thing. Both were before that day strangers introduced by a mutual friend.

However, matters of the heart do not take long to connect especially if both are all out for it.

While the housewarming party they actually came for was getting underway, these two were taking out time to know each other. Gisting all the way to the point of conviction that the conversation should not end at the party.

Mr Oladipo wasted no time in asking for her contact, and as if she had prompted him to ask, she gave the digits without hesitation.

Weeks upon weeks, the conversation continued, and somewhere in-between the line, the jolly good friends decided it was time to take it to the next level.

In less than two years of meeting, both had ‘graduated’ from mere strangers to gist mates, friends, confidants, lovers and now husband and wife.

You want to know how they progressed? Walk with me in this episode with my spotlighted couple, Mr and Mrs Oladipo.

1. Can you take us back to how your love story started?

Mr Oladipo: We met at a colleague’s housewarming party in Lagos. We were introduced by someone we both knew, and we spent some time gisting. I then asked for her number before leaving. We stayed in touch, and our friendship eventually grew into a relationship.

Mrs Oladipo: I remember him as someone who was easy to talk to. We exchanged numbers after our conversation, and he called me a few days later. We started talking more often, and I gradually became interested in him. Our friendship grew naturally, and before long, we decided to give the relationship a chance.

2. What was the moment you knew, “This is the one”?

Mr Oladipo: I knew she was someone I could build a home with because we understood each other. She was honest with me, and I liked how we could discuss important things without pretending to agree on everything.

Mrs Oladipo: I became sure when I noticed that his actions matched his words. He was consistent, respectful and willing to listen to me.

3. How many years have you been together?

Mr Oladipo: We have been together for 10 years and married for eight. We have learnt a lot about each other, and I am happy with the life we are building together.

Mrs Oladipo: We have spent 10 years together, including eight years of marriage.

4. What has helped you keep your marriage strong over the years, especially after the arrival of children?

Mr Oladipo: Communication has helped us a lot. We discuss our plans, share responsibilities and try to make decisions together. We also make time to check on each other, even when we are busy with the children and work.

Mrs Oladipo: For me, it is understanding and teamwork. We have learnt that running a home requires effort from both of us. We help each other when we can and try not to allow everyday responsibilities to take away our time together.

5. How do you make each other feel special, even in small ways? What fun habits have stayed with you throughout your marriage?

Mr Oladipo: I try to appreciate the things she does for our family and help her whenever I can. We also enjoy joking with each other. simple conversation at home most times turn into funny moments that make us both laugh.

Mrs Oladipo: He likes bringing home snacks for me, especially when he knows I have had a busy day. I also love to prepare some of his favourite meals. We enjoy talking about our day as well.

6. How do you handle disagreements or tough moments now, compared to your early years?

Mr Oladipo: We have learnt to talk about our problems instead of allowing them to last for days. I try to listen to her point of view, and we look for a solution that works for both of us.

Mrs Oladipo: We are more patient with each other now. In the early years, we sometimes misunderstood each other, but we have learnt to communicate better. We apologise when necessary and try not to make small disagreements bigger than they need to be.

7. What is one thing your partner still does that melts your heart?

Mr Oladipo: She always checks on me. Her message asking how I am doing makes me feel loved.

Mrs Oladipo: He pays attention to me and my needs.

8. What was one of the biggest challenges you faced together, and how did you overcome it?

Mr Oladipo: One challenge we faced was adjusting to the responsibilities that came with starting our family. There were many things to plan for, and we had to learn how to manage our time and finances better. We discussed our priorities and worked together to handle them.

Mrs Oladipo: Balancing family responsibilities with our personal goals was not always easy. Sometimes, we had to put certain plans on hold and focus on what mattered most at the time. We supported each other and learnt to take things one step at a time.

9. What advice would you give to younger couples hoping for a lasting marriage?

Mr Oladipo: Learn to communicate and respect each other. Be honest about your needs and be willing to make adjustments as you grow together.

Mrs Oladipo: Be patient with each other, Learn to appreciate your partner, discuss your problems and work together to build the kind of home you both want.

10. If you could sum up your marriage in one word or sentence, what would it be?

Mr Oladipo: Partnership. We have learnt that marriage works better when both people are willing to contribute, support each other and face life’s challenges together.

Mrs Oladipo: Friendship. He is the person I share my worries, happiness and everyday experiences with. After eight years of marriage, I am grateful that we continue to learn from each other and grow together.
